An absolutely incredible true story by a very gifted storyteller

This family’s story is just incredible and the author tells it in a way that makes you feel very close to them all. Their love of family, steadfastness, endurance, grace and kindness in the face of unspeakable difficulties resound throughout this book. I was totally engaged and couldn’t put it down. The author’s research into the history of that time as well as her extensive interviews with Danny Sr. and Danny Jr. bring detail and authenticity that is very moving. Although I was never a great student of history, seeing it unfold in the lives of the Szafranski family really brought it to life. I would love to see this book become a part of the high school Global Studies curriculum so today’s students might better grasp the terrible conditions and helplessness Eastern Europeans lived with for so long. We have such an amazing life here in the U.S. and this book helps us to remember to be grateful for the privilege of living here. It is clear the author put in decades of effort to make this narrative as accurate and complete as possible. She did an outstanding job and I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

A captivating story of a true American hero, rich with historical detail. From the very first page, it pulls you in and doesn’t let go. This book is not just a great read—it’s the kind of story that deserves to be made into a movie.

This book ran me through so many different emotions. I loved it! It is a remarkable true story and a history lesson all in one book. It told the life story of a brave, kind and loyal man and his family all while teaching me parts of history that I never knew. It also makes you realize just how lucky we are to born in the USA. I highly recommend reading it. I’d give it 10 stars if I could!

Great Reading Intertwining Humanity and History
Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024
What I loved about this book was that it was a very human story which also taught so much about history. It is hard to believe that Danny survived the awful situations he was in. He was portrayed as such a kind, caring man who carried the burden of history on his shoulders. The book is a wonderful reminder of how lucky we are and to count our blessings. The overall message is toremind us to be kind … that you do not know what someone else is going through.
The book is beautifully written. I just couldn’t put it down
